TEACHING
Teaching is at the center of my work as a historian and an analyst. I believe that big ideas can be and often are conveyed in ways that are accessible and invite engagement.
I've taught or led discussion sections for pretty much every type of course available at the post-high school level - intimate upper-level seminars, the American history undergrad survey, research methodology for history majors, freshman seminars, developmental writing at the community college level and rhetoric - and at all levels have provided one-on-one advising and writing coaching.
My teaching philosophy is simple: empower students through creating an inclusive classroom environment to engage with new ideas and rethink where to find and how to critically analyze their sources of information. My students have visited dairies and meat processing plants, physically walked the routes of suburbanization, interviewed farmers' market shoppers, perused historical cookbooks, and spoken with female veterans about the experience of breaking gender barriers aboard Navy ships.
